How to start Windsurfing in Pattaya and what to expect
Where to Windsurf or do other wind related watersports
Windsurfing options around Pattaya are fairly limited, but Na Jomtien Beach is a convenient place to start. Head for Soi 14: Na Jomtien lies south of Jomtien, which itself is just south of Pattaya.
Getting There
From Pattaya Northern Bus Station, where buses arrive from and depart for Bangkok, Na Jomtien is roughly 15 kilometres to the south. The journey takes around 15 minutes, or about 20 minutes when traffic is heavy.
Where to Stay
If you plan to stay for a few days, B2 Sea View Hotel is the closest accommodation option. B2 operates several hotels in and around Pattaya, so make sure you book the Sea View property.
Sea Views and Windsurfing Centres
For the best views, consider a room on floors six to eight of the eight-storey hotel. From your window, you can look towards the southern part of the Bay of Bangkok; step into the open-air hallway and you’ll see the northern part of the bay and Koh Larn. Amara Water Sports, the nearest windsurfing centre, is just a 200-metre walk away. Club Loongchat is another 200 metres north. Both offer similar rental pricing, making either a practical choice for occasional visitors or holidaymakers who don’t bring their own gear.
Equipment Rentals
Amara Water Sports offers a wide selection of sails and, in particular, boards, from longboards with daggerboards to freeride and freerace models. Professional gear costs 700 baht per hour, or you can buy a 10-hour package for 6,000 baht, with free choice of boards and sails. If you’re out for an hour and ten minutes or so, they generally charge for just one hour. The initial price may seem steep, but that flexibility makes it a little easier on a smaller budget.
Buying and Storing Gear
If you’d rather have your own equipment, you can buy it at either centre. Amara Water Sports carries Starboard and Severne products, while Club Loongchat, 200 metres north, sells SE Sails; I’m not sure which board brands it stocks. Both centres offer storage. At Amara, storing a complete board-and-sail setup cost 10,000 baht through 2026, though a price increase was announced for 2027. Club Loongchat price was also 10,000 baht per year, but I don’t know whether it will rise in 2027.
Ready-to-Sail Storage
You can leave your sail fully rigged and hanging in the storage area, so when it’s time to go windsurfing, you can simply grab it, adjust the downhaul and outhaul, and head out. It’s wonderfully convenient. Alternatively, you can store your equipment unrigged and rig the sail each time—the choice is yours.
Windsurfing Seasons
The wind here is particularly good starting from mid-to-late November through mid-to-late January. By February, it has already begun to shift south, making the northeast monsoon season fairly short. The southerly season can be mixed at first but tends to improve. In 2027, for example, there was a five- or six-week stretch from about mid of March to end of April when afternoon southerlies reached around 12-20 knots almost every day.
Northeast Monsoon Conditions
During the northeast monsoon, the wind can be very strong in the morning, although it is usually strongest well offshore. No one should venture out there alone or unprepared. Towards noon, the northeast wind often drops considerably or stops altogether, sometimes leaving the water as flat as a swimming pool. A north-northwesterly then typically takes over in the early afternoon, around 12:30 or 1 p.m., blowing at 12 to 22 knots. Waves can easily reach 80 centimetres to a metre, but conditions are relatively easy to ride compared with many stronger southwest monsoon winds.
Why December for NE monsoo season?
December is probably your best bet: in December 2025, there were 27 days with winds above 12 knots for at least an hour or two, sometimes up to 4 hours. November 2025, by contrast, was rather disappointing. An in January 2026 only during the first half of the month good wind appeared.
